Prince Grigory Potemkin’s role in establishing Russian Hegemoni over the Ottoman Empire?
Answer: Prince Grigory Potemkin played a significant role in establishing Russian hegemony over the Ottoman Empire during the late 18th century. He was a key military leader and statesman under Catherine the Great, and his influence was instrumental in several major events:
Russo-Turkish Wars: Potemkin was a prominent commander in the Russo-Turkish Wars, particularly the wars of 1768-1774 and 1787-1792. His strategic decisions and military leadership were crucial in securing Russian victories.
Annexation of Crimea: One of Potemkin’s most notable achievements was the peaceful annexation of Crimea in 1783. This move significantly expanded Russian territory and influence in the Black Sea region.
Siege of Ochakov: During the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792, Potemkin led the successful siege of Ochakov in 1788. This victory further solidified Russian dominance over the Ottoman Empire.
Colonization and Development: As the governor-general of Russia’s southern provinces, Potemkin oversaw the colonization and development of these regions. He founded several important cities, including Kherson, Nikolayev, Sevastopol, and Yekaterinoslav, which became key military and naval bases.
Potemkin’s efforts in these areas not only expanded Russian territory but also strengthened its military and economic power, establishing a lasting hegemony over the Ottoman Empire. His legacy is marked by his strategic brilliance and his ability to transform the geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe.
When did Russia loose Crimea?
Answer: Russia lost control of Crimea in 1954 when the Soviet Union transferred the region from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (UkrSSR). This transfer was part of a symbolic gesture to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Pereyaslav, which marked the reunification of Ukraine with Russia.
However, in 2014, Russia annexed Crimea following a controversial referendum held under military occupation. This event marked the beginning of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War.
Is it right to claim Crimea belongs to Russia?
Answer: The status of Crimea is a highly contentious issue with strong opinions on both sides. Here are some key points to consider:
Historical Context: Crimea was part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic until 1954, when it was transferred to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. This transfer was largely symbolic and administrative within the Soviet Union.
Annexation in 2014: In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea following a controversial referendum held under military occupation. The referendum, which allegedly showed overwhelming support for joining Russia, is not recognized by Ukraine or the majority of the international community.
International Law: The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution affirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity and declaring the referendum invalid. Most countries view Crimea as part of Ukraine and consider the annexation a violation of international law.
Current Situation: Despite international condemnation, Russia maintains de facto control over Crimea. The region operates under Russian administration, including its legal and economic systems.
The question of Crimea’s rightful ownership is complex and deeply rooted in historical, political, and legal factors. The international community largely supports Ukraine’s claim to Crimea, but Russia’s control remains a significant geopolitical issue.

My Winterally comment:
Of course the Western International Community wants Crimea to be a part of Ukraine, as well as they want Ukraine to be a part of Western Europe. Western International Community also regard the former Eastern European states as righteous parts of the modern Europe, NATO and EU. Everybody who has not yet lost his mind, understand that this was a bad idea and a provocation against Russia. Maybe Mexico could be in alliance with Russia along with Brasil? Sounds fair.
